There is a lot of doom and gloom around.
Sometimes I switch on the TV news and think to myself:
“What NOW?”
After all, we’ve got war on the edge of Europe… threats of nuclear attacks… global warming… and political instability in the west…
Here in Britain, inflation is soaring, fuel and energy prices are sky-high and recession looms.
It can feel so overwhelming!
The future seems so bleak…
And it’s tempting to think…
What’s the point in trying to do anything with your life while everything is so up-in-the-air and chaotic?
After all, nobody wants to spend money in a time like this!
Nobody’s interested in buying online courses when they’re worried about their income!
You might be forgiven for thinking that you’re better off putting aside your plans for a home business and simply hunkering down beneath a blanket with the heating off until everything gets better.
Well, I totally understand that point of view.
But there is another far more hopeful way of looking at it.
Why Your Future Is Not Yet Written
I recently read Hope in the Dark, a book by a brilliant writer, thinker and political activist named Rebecca Solnit.
It’s really inspiring, because she explains that the WORST thing is to give up, believing that there’s nothing you can do that will make a difference.
One of the best lines in the book is this…
“The future is not yet written.”
It’s so true.
There are plenty of possibilities for your future, even in times of recession, war and uncertainty… even if dark clouds are gathering up above.
“When you recognise uncertainty,” writes Solnit, “you recognise that you may be able to influence the outcomes.”
In other words, nothing is fixed.
Nothing is inevitable.
You have a choice.
You can hide away, do absolutely nothing, and take whatever comes, however bad it might be.
Or you can take action and give yourself the best possible future available.
Because even in the worst of times, there are always opportunities – new trends… new needs… new desires… new problems to help solve.
“Inside the word emergency is emerge”, writes Solnit, “from an emergency, new things come forth.”
This is why it may well be that now is the very best time for you to start a venture, like creating a course.
Because doing so has never been so URGENT or IMPORTANT.
The necessity of you securing a second income, and giving yourself financial independence, could give you the kind of motivational drive you wouldn’t have in times when everything is rosy.
And the same goes for your potential course customers too.
There are people out there that are in desperate need of new skills, new careers, new moneymaking avenues…
There are people urgently seeking practical ways to improve their mental health, enjoy productive lives, organise their time and achieve their goals.
These kinds of needs can actually increase in times of economic strife.
And, therefore, you could offer something of serious value to them right now.
To illustrate this, I’ll tell you a business secret that rather ages me 😉.
How to Succeed in a Recession
It might amaze you to learn that I had my first ever ‘million-pound launch’ during the 2009 recession.
You can probably remember how grim things were back then.
The financial crisis of 2007-2008 was a horror show – the most serious economic disaster since the Great Depression of 1929.
We had collapsing banks, job losses, closed businesses, crashing house prices and political turmoil.
It felt like everything was falling apart, suddenly, after years of prosperity.
Turning on the TV news each night was as bad as it is today.
With all the bleakness of that time, I was worried that I had put so much of my hard work into creating an information product that would fail.
Surely nobody would want to buy it when the economy was tanking?
And yet…
The opposite turned out to be true.
I launched the product, regardless, and was amazed at the response.
In a time of uncertainty, this product was something that gave customers control over their lives and their financial destiny.
The sales rolled in, and it breezed past the million-pound turnover mark, much to my amazement.
From that day, I realised that even when it’s all ‘doom and gloom,’ it’s a mistake to make assumptions that people won’t pay for a good product.
So if you’re feeling like there’s no point in putting your first course together, please bear this in mind…
There will always be people that need your help to improve their lives.
And perhaps they need this now more than ever.
Anyway, I hope this gives you some hope!
