This weekend I shared a room with a wonderful group of people.
They were all there to learn about building their own part-time Amazon business.
I wasn’t an attendee, though!
I was the person running the event, along with a chap called Ben, who has made a small fortune selling products using the ‘Fulfilled By Amazon’ service.
Funnily enough, Ben was one of my very first students over a decade ago!
I taught him how to put his strategies into a course that would help others follow in his footsteps.
Now he’s not only earning an income from selling products, he’s also earning from his own courses and live workshops.
Effectively, Ben has added a massive new income stream simply by sharing what he already knows!
However, I’m not here to talk about Amazon…
What struck me most about the weekend’s event was what some of the attendees told me during our coffee breaks.
How AI is Changing People’s Lives
I was startled by just how many people told me that what I’d taught them about Artificial Intelligence (AI) had made a massive impact on their lives.
It came up time and time again…
For instance, a chap named Barry told me how he has battled all his life with dyslexia (unknowingly as he only recently got diagnosed).
Yet by using AI in the way I showed him he is now able to create fluent and compelling advertising copy for his thriving business.
There was a lovely woman named Irene who told me that she is using the AI system I showed her to help her write a book that could make a massive difference for a lot of women.
And then there was Roger…who I introduced to AI late last year.
When his wife started suffering from some worrying health symptoms, he was able to use ChatGPT to come up with useful suggestions to take to his GP.
(Obviously I’d never suggest you use it as a replacement for medical advice but it’s certainly helpful in guiding you towards possibilities to discuss with your practitioner!)
Now here’s the thing…
Despite AI being so powerful and useful to people – and despite getting such great feedback at the weekend – I almost avoided teaching the AI subject altogether.
I might be a professional direct marketer and course creator with nearly 30 years experience, but when ChatGPT first exploded in late 2022 it didn’t seem like the sort of thing that was my area of expertise.
Of course the team and I were using it a LOT from the get-go…
Almost daily, I was experimenting with it as a tool for research, planning, brainstorming, copywriting, content creation and self-education.
But I assumed that there would be all kinds of software experts, tech boffins and computer specialists teaching it.
After all, they were the experts, right?
Then it dawned on me…
I was using AI in a very practical way that could help others!
I understood the practical applications of things like ChatGPT, Claude and Dall-E…
Because I was using these tools every day for practical purposes.
I didn’t need to be some qualified AI expert or tech boffin…
I didn’t need to have articles published in Wired, Popular Mechanics or PC Pro Magazine.
All I needed was to share my own experience trying these new AI tools in the real world and getting results that I could share with others.
Which was exactly what I was doing!
After all, not everyone needs to know how AI works on a technical level?
If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner, you just need to know how to use it to get specific results for a certain aim… for instance, researching a blog post, writing a Facebook advert or planning out a course.
This was what the team and I learned through our own trial and error.
And when business contacts started asking for my help with AI I realised I was as good a person as any to share my knowledge of AI as a business and marketing tool.
And this got me thinking…
Why It’s Wrong to Assume You Aren’t An Expert
A lot of potential course creators get put off by the notion that they are not expert enough, or qualified enough, to share what they know.
So they hold themselves back from teaching useful things that might genuinely help others.
I felt the same about AI – to the point where I nearly avoided sharing my knowledge.
Which would have been such a shame…
Because at the weekend, several lovely people made the effort to come and tell me that I was the FIRST person to show them properly how to start using AI.
In other words, I was the right person at the right time to teach them.
And it didn’t matter that I didn’t have a PHD in information technology.
All that mattered was that I was ahead of them in terms of my practical experience of AI, and therefore was able to share what I had learned.
So the lesson here is simple…
- Don’t hide what you know – it could be so useful to other people who will relate to your experience.
- Don’t assume you aren’t expert enough – as long as you are using a strategy or system in the real world, and getting a result, then someone will benefit from your help.
- And don’t assume that there are already tonnes of people already sharing this knowledge – it might surprise you to know how relatively few experts there are in any niche subject – and how few have your particular angle or approach.
Anyway, it seems that my AI experiences are proving useful.
I keep getting emails from people telling me that AI is helping them overcome obstacles and make real breakthroughs.
It is such a delight to hear!
Actually, if what I’ve shared about AI has helped you I’d love to know – just comment below or email me at [email protected] 😁
