The other day I noticed something interesting about our sat nav.

Whenever I get into the car and turn on the ignition, the sat nav comes on automatically.

I can then punch in the postcode or address that I want to go to.

But…

The map itself, showing me where to go, doesn’t fully appear UNTIL the car starts moving.

As soon as you put it into first gear and get going, the map magically opens out on the screen and starts to tell you which way to turn.

I’m not sure you have a sat nav like that?

Maybe you use your smartphone instead, or perhaps you are truly Old School and don’t have one at all – (quite frankly, I’d be genuinely LOST without it).

But for me, our car’s sat nav works very much like the process of course creation.

You might want to create a course for a good reason – for instance, to create a second income… to leave your job…. or transfer your skills online where you can earn more money for less effort…

Perhaps you have a specific goal, like buying a big house, working abroad or putting your kid through uni.

These are like your DESTINATION.

You can punch the coordinates into your ‘sat nav’ and it will give you a strong sense of where you want to go.

OK, that’s a great start.

But, like my car sat nav, none of this is any good unless you actually start moving.

To activate your roadmap to success, you need to press your foot on the accelerator.

You need to press ‘GO’.

If you don’t start moving, nothing can start happening.

I realise that this might sound insanely obvious.

But you’d be amazed at how many people don’t realise this.

The mistake that many first-time
course creators make

At first, most hopeful course creators do all the right things…

✓ They see an advert or blog about course creation and take an active interest in finding out more

✓ They attend the webinars or watch the videos, which introduces them to the idea of course creation

✓ They download some tools and templates

✓ They spend a few days setting some big goals, just like I recommend

✓ They might even spend a few weeks… even months… coming up with a plan for what kind of subject they might choose, or what course type they might go for

All of that is FANTASTIC.

Brilliant stuff. Top marks. 👍

Doing all the above is like finding out where you want to go… deciding to leave… then opening the car door, getting inside, buckling up, and turning on the ignition.

But then…

A large proportion of hopeful course creators don’t move forward with it.

Instead, they download more things…. make some lists… spend more time thinking of topics… ask more questions… read another blog… think of some snappy titles…. tidy up their desk… daydream about what they might do with their extra income…

In other words, instead of driving, they sit in the driver’s seat, adjusting the mirror, fiddling with the radio, changing the voice style on the Sat Nav…

But never decisively push down on that accelerator.

After a while they think, “This isn’t working for me” and they get out of the car again.

Yet all they had to do was set off!

How to Activate Your Roadmap

If you’re feeling a bit stung, because what I’ve described sounds a bit like your situation, please don’t be offended.

I understand why you don’t want to hit the accelerator and start moving.

Because it feels scary.

It feels like you’re committing to the project, and when you do that, there are all kinds of risks…

What if you fail?

What if you don’t enjoy it?

What if you lack the skills?

What if you get too distracted?

What if you crash?

But these fears always seem larger when you’re sat in the car, thinking about the massive journey ahead.

It’s all in your head at that point.

However, when you start going on your first course, each step will unfold, one after the other, just like the directions on a sat nav.

The more you do, the more doable it seems.
