I’ve got something for you to try that I think you’ll find fun…
…and also VERY useful.
But first, if you haven’t already, please check out my free resource, which shows you how to choose the course topic that’s best for you.
You can find it here: FREE Course Topic Download
Okay, once you’ve worked out the general topic, you need to make your course more specific and unique.
Because when you do this, your course will really stand out from the competition.
So this is what I want to help you do now.
It works a bit like one of those wooden ‘nesting dolls’ you might have seen as a child.
You start with a large doll…
Then you open it up to find a smaller doll inside…
Then you open that up to find an even smaller doll.
Well, that’s pretty much how we’re going to find your first profitable course topic.
It’s all about getting more narrow and focussed each time until you nail that brilliant stand-out idea!
So let’s begin…
Step ONE – pick a category
First, decide which broad category you are in.
These are the three core ones:
- Health
- Wealth
- Relationships
There is also a ‘bonus’ category – “hobbies/passions” – but those can often be found under the main three headings, so that’s why it’s not always considered a stand-alone niche!
An example of a hobby might be ‘gardening’. But this could also be a way to save money by growing your own food (wealth) or a way to avoid GM foods and pesticides and improve your nutrition (health).
Anyway, to start this process, you need to work out broadly where you fit in relation to one of these general areas.
Got one in mind?
Great!
Now let’s drill down a bit further and figure out your sub-category.
Step TWO – pick a sub-category
For example, let’s say that your experiences and interests are in the general area of ‘wealth’.
That could include any number of smaller topic areas:
- Investing
- Trading
- Tax
- Personal finance
- Business
- Property
- Career
Or let’s imagine you’re into health matters. Again, there are a whole load of sub-categories you could pick to focus on…
- Fitness
- Diet
- Nutrition
- Mindfulness
- Sport
- Pain relief
And if ‘relationships’ is the general area that appeals to you, then you also have plenty to choose from:
- Parenting
- Dating
- Marriage
- Divorce and separation
- Friendships
- Work relationships
Once you’ve picked a sub-category, please don’t stop there – at this point your course topic is still too broad to stand out.
Instead, let’s drill down even deeper again.
Step THREE – pick a smaller niche
Take your sub-category and think about a niche within that category that you could focus on.
For example, in ‘wealth’ you might choose:
- (Investing) Cryptocurrencies
- (Business) Selling homemade products online
- (Property) Buy to let
In ‘health’ you might choose:
- (Diet) Paleo diet method
- (Nutrition) Vegetable gardening
- (Mindfulness) Meditation
Or in ‘relationships’ you might choose…
- (parenting) Potty training
- (dating) Overcoming shyness
- (work) Persuasion techniques
Can you see how this works?
You’re basically narrowing down your larger category into something more specific.
The reason for this is that the more specific you make your course, the more easy it is to find a target market for it – and to reach them online.
After all, if you try and talk to everyone, you’ll appeal to no-one…
So for bonus points…
Let’s see if you can do this one more time.
Step FOUR – narrow it down again
Have a think about your niche.
Can you get even MORE specific?
For example…
- Selling homemade products online – you could pick something like, “how to sell upcycled jewellery on Etsy” or “how to sell white label products on Amazon”.
- Vegetable gardening – you could pick, “how to grow vegetables in a tiny garden” or “how to grow your own medicinal herbs”.
- Buy to Let – you could focus on “how to buy bargain properties at auction”, or “How to run a holiday let”.
It could even be as simple as taking your sub-category and deciding on what kind of person you’re going for. For example…
- Potty training – you could focus on “toddler potty training for working mums”.
- Cryptocurrencies – you could narrow it down to “cryptocurrencies for beginners”.
- Persuasion techniques – you could focus on ‘persuasion techniques for managers”.
Don’t worry if you can’t manage this final step just yet. I’ve got plenty of ideas to help you, which I’ll show you soon.
But if you do have a niche in mind right now, then please jot it down!
Anyway, I hope you get the idea!
Just one final thing…
Try not to get flustered or overthink this – just give it a go!
Let me know how you get on!
Supply teaching for beginners.
There are no books or courses for this topic. Original, but not on your list
That’s a great idea. There is already a huge demand in the teaching market for lesson plans and that sort of area but I love that you’ve niched it down!
Brilliant.Thank you Heloise.
So glad you found it helpful Fiona
