The pros and cons of sharing this ’embarrassing’ secret

by | Jul 5, 2024 | Articles | 0 comments

Quick question for you.

“How much money do you make?”

Now, I don’t want you to actually send me your answer.

But how does a question like that make you feel?

If someone asked you this at a dinner party, would you be embarrassed, offended, or annoyed?

Or would you gladly launch into a description of your salary, savings and net worth?

And what about on social media, or on a website…?

Would you share your income there with anyone who wants to read it?

You see, in the UK many of us get very uncomfortable talking about money.

We shuffle and go red when asked probing questions about it – and woe betide it ever being a discussion at a dinner party or gathering!

In fact, in 2019, a research study showed the majority of British people believe it is easier to talk about mental health and infertility than about money.

And one-in-five of them didn’t think it suitable to ever disclose their salary in a social setting, while the majority said it was NEVER appropriate at work.

So I don’t blame you if you feel bemused or affronted by my question.

But there’s a good reason for me bringing this awkward topic up (and I’m sorry if it’s making you squirm – it’s making me squirm a bit, too!)

Because when it comes to sharing expertise and advice online, there are two opposing sides.

Those who talk about the money they make – and those who don’t.

But who’s wrong and who’s right?

My answer might surprise you…

Why I Don’t Talk (Too Much) About Money…to you

If you are a reader of these emails, you probably don’t hear me talk much about money.

Okay, yes, I do mention I run a 7-figure business (and that’s 7 figures a year not 7 figures in total. 😉)

But not much more really.

I’m not one of those people constantly sharing sales figures and earnings screenshots or waving a big wad of cash at the screen.

Yet in other parts of my business, it’s different….I do talk about it a lot more because that part of my business has an audience that wants to hear about that and that’s what inspires them.

Here with you, rather that talk about figures, I talk more about what I’ve achieved in terms of my work success, happiness and lifestyle, and what can be aspired to.

For instance, I might share how I put my kids through private school, or how I took a business class trip to New York, or how I give myself extra time off on weekdays to spend time with my family.

And here’s why…

If you have any product or service (including a course) you need to inspire people to use it.

You want them to take the training and USE IT!

That means showing them how it can help them achieve their goals.

To do this, you need to describe the future benefits they will enjoy after completing your course.

Paint them a picture they can see in their mind’s eyes.

What would their life, business or career look like if they used the skills and knowledge you’re going to give them?

Sometimes, to some audiences, that WILL include specifics about money.

An example might be that if you were creating a course about making money from selling crafts on Etsy, you would need to give figures about how much you could make.

If you were offering advice on household budgeting or getting out of debt, based on your own experience, it would help to show specifically how much money you saved, and what the financial result was.

If you were showing someone how to earn an income from their own dress-making business, why not show them what kind of income that might be.

And yet – if you were showing someone sewing skills so that they could make their own designs, shouting about how much money you make might be pointless and even off-putting.

So it all depends on who you are talking to.

What is it that the majority of your (future) customers would like to hear?

What is it that will inspire them to act?

Now I know that this is where a lot of first-time course creators might get the fear…

Surely if we ‘show off’ about how much we make, it’s tacky… gaudy… shameless… embarrassing?

EEK!

People will hate it, won’t they?

Well, no (not necessarily).

First, you need to realise that the old British attitudes to talking about money are changing…

A New Trend for Financial Openness

New research commissioned by Virgin Money, published a few months ago, has shown that four in ten people think Brits are better at talking about money now than they were in 2019.

And 43% believe that younger generations are more open than older generations about money.

The topics people are most open to chatting about publicly are:

  • household bills (53%),
  • cost of everyday essentials (53%)
  • salary (32%).

So there’s shift happening.

It’s not taboo anymore to talk about your earnings.

Now, I don’t mean you need to act like one of those American ‘get rich quick’ promotions with a muscle bound bloke standing beside a sports car, boasting about earning a thousand pounds a day before breakfast.

It doesn’t need to be like that.

Instead, act as if your target customer was sat in front of you in your living room, or in a nice café.

Think about what, respectfully, they need to hear in order to realise the benefits of taking your course.

If that includes you telling them how much you’ve made from a product, service or business, then consider doing that.

Just bear in mind that some people aren’t as interested in money as much as what money will do for them.

So focus on the life transformation as much as the dollars and pounds they might make.

Also remember the underlying emotional needs that might make someone want to take your course.

On the surface, that might be to start a business, earn money, save money or get a better job.

But underneath, there might be much deeper motivators…

A desire for personal fulfilment and self-pride….

A desire to stop worry, stress and anxiety…

A desire to spend more time with friends and family…

These are usually more important for making that crucial sale.
