A while ago my husband and I published our first courses on financial trading.
They were aimed at non-professionals who wanted to make money from the stock markets and currency markets.
Back then, there were really only three types…
You could get a general education on how to trade from home, including how to set up with a broker, and some basic techniques… in short, a ‘Quick Start’ kind of deal.
The second type usually looked at one system, one strategy or one particular market – effectively a ‘focus’ style approach.
The third type was effectively a ‘tipping service’ where the customer just got the advice on when and how to trade, without any education at all.
However, we soon noticed that there were some people who wanted more than the Quick Start or Focus options.
Yes, they wanted help getting set up, with the basic background, tools and advice…
Yes, they wanted a proven system to follow…
And yes, they wanted some tips and recommendations…
But they wanted it all in ONE course, without losing any of the depth or detail.
Not only that, they wanted that course to be created by someone they trusted, who they could contact for help, who would update them regularly and keep them on track.
So we went ahead and created something that did all of that, we created it with a great trader– and while it took a lot more work to make and run, we could charge £1,997 (plus VAT) for it – and that was still a bargain based on the sheer amount of advice and help he offered.
This kind of course is known as a ‘Signature Course’.
The power of a Signature Course
In short, a signature course covers a whole subject, with multiple topics, from start to finish.
It’s designed to give customers the full package so that they can start from scratch towards a particular goal, and get everything they need to achieve it.
Now I’ll admit right, this option isn’t for everyone…
But if you can create a course like this, it can be massively rewarding for both the customer – who gets a full education in the subject they want to learn about – and for you, who will have something they can be proud of, and which is hugely profitable (that first signature course generated over 7 figures in its first launch weekend).
And it went on to attract thousands of students for months and years to come.
Let’s take my own ‘Course Creation Academy’ as an example.
My aim is to take someone through every step they need in order to create and profit from their own course.
There are a lot of topics involved in course creation, including choosing a subject area, doing research, creating content, coming up with a title, choosing your format, recording videos, writing sales copy.
I could have chosen any one of these as a Focus Course, but instead, my Signature Course covers them all.
On top of that, the Course Creation Academy comes with webinars, tutorials, feedback and support, so that people never feel stuck, confused or demotivated.
Naturally, a Signature Course takes the most work, as you’re covering more ground, with more depth.
Often (depending on your price) there will be more support and interaction with your customers, too, so it takes up much more of your time and requires more commitment.
However, this type of course is often the most profitable, as you can charge a much higher price for it – anything from £449 to £4,999 (even more sometimes).
If you think about it, at the top end, you only need to sell one of those courses per month to be heading towards £60K turnover per year.
Once the hard work is done creating the course, your workload drastically reduces as you spend the rest of the time simply tweaking it and concentrating on adding value.
So is a Signature Course right for you?
I’d recommend this kind of approach if:
- You already work as a coach, trainer or advisor – because a signature course is effectively a version of what you already do, but translated into an online course. I’d say that you’d be crazy not to do this, as it will vastly leverage the income you make from what you know.
- You are an expert in your field – if you’ve reached a level of achievement in your specialty, then this is something you should consider, as you have the knowledge and credibility to make it work.
- You have created or developed something from scratch successfully – if you have taught yourself how to do something, learned the ropes, studied the techniques and got there in the end – then really all you need to do is translate everything you discovered, and everything you did, into a course.
The idea of creating a signature course can seem overwhelming when you first think about it.
But I’ll let you into a secret…
There is a way you can be paid by your students while you create your signature course (before you’ve built the whole thing)!
Sounds crazy?
Well, that’s something I discuss in my free online workshop – if you haven’t attended already you can do so here: Free Workshop
Otherwise, if you want to start smaller, then I’d recommend trying the QuickStart or Focus Course options first (you can check out my recent blog posts on these here: Quick Start and here: Focus Course, then developing this ‘bells and whistles’ signature version later, when you have built up your confidence.
And of course, there is always the option to create multiple focus courses on different topics, earning an income from those, then eventually combine them into a signature course further down the line.
That way you can build your material up over the months and years, while also making a profit as you go.
