The Snowflake Principle

As a kid, I loved it when it snowed.

Doesn’t happen so much nowadays in this country – certainly not in London!

But I remember sitting by the radiator and idly watching the flakes float down and land on the window.

For a moment, you could see each one so clearly – all its tiny, intricate patterns – before it melted.

I recall my mum saying to me…

“Each one of those is totally unique – there is no other like it in the world, and never will be one like it again.”

That used to blow my mind!

So many flakes falling from the sky, for millions of years… before the great Ice Ages and the great mammoths… all the way through human history.

And yet not a single one had ever been exactly the same.

The thing is…

This is true of YOU, too.

You are as unique as a flake of snow!

Experts reckon that, since we first evolved, around 117 billion human beings have been born.

And as of March this year, there are 7.9 billion humans alive on the planet.

By any reckoning, that’s a lot of people.

And yet…

Not one of them is the same as you.

Nobody has your precise combination of physical features, genes, personality quirks, experiences, ideas, interest, fashion sense and hobbies.

That’s a very powerful thing to understand.

Particularly when it comes to having the confidence to create a brilliant and profitable course.

And here’s why…

YOU are the USP

I’ve recently written about ways that you can choose a course topic and then refine that into a narrow niche.

The aim is to focus on something that’s specific and unique.

This way you can stand out from the crowd and find that eager, hungry target audience for your course.

Now, there are lots of extra tips and advice I can give you on that process – and I will be covering them soon, I promise…

But for now, I want to reassure you of something.

I know that a lot of women who want to create a course worry that they might not have anything ‘special’ to offer.

They worry that they’re not expert enough… or there’s too much competition out there… or that their chosen course topic has “been done already”.

But the thing is…

That’s not true.

Because while it’s important to narrow down your course niche, you also need to remember that YOU are the unique element of the course.

In business, we are always looking for a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) – that quality, feature or benefit in a product which no other rival can match.

With course creation, it’s the creator who is the USP.

It’s YOU that makes it unique… because you ARE unique.

Take me, for example.

I have a lot of competition.

There are many other course creation experts out there, offering their strategies and advice on websites, Instagram, Facebook and emails just like this one.

And as far as I’m concerned, that’s great!

As I have mentioned before, competition is actually a good thing – you can see why on this blog post here.

There will be some people that will prefer to learn from me, and others who prefer my competitors, for reasons I have no control over.

Because a lot of it is down to my particular combination of qualities. For example…

  • My age…

I’m over 50 – so there might be younger wannabe course creators out there that just don’t want to hear from someone that reminds them of their mum…

Or equally, this may work in my favour for a potential customer who wants someone with experience of running a business while raising a family.

  • My gender

Like it or loathe it – that’s a factor too! Some people will respond more to men, others to women, and I’m sure there’s a market for non-binary course creators too.

  • My style

I’m someone that encourages fast action. I’m not about dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s. I like to help people get something out there quickly and making money ASAP.

That approach is going to annoy the heck out of some people – and yet it will be right up the street of others!

Those are just a few examples of how I stand out.

But of course, you’ll have your own qualities – things that make you appealing to the people who might buy your course (and which might make you unappealing to others too!).

For example, you might be worried that you aren’t like a competitor who’s always so slick and glossy in their presentations.

However, this could work in your favour.

Because there are many people who baulk at the slick stuff. They might want someone more relatable, more down to earth, and more focussed on content than style.

In which case, they would prefer YOU.

And the good news is…

There isn’t much you can do about this.

You are who you are.

To become your course’s USP, you just need to recognise your unique qualities and not worry about being like other people.

Let them do their thing, and feel free to do yours.

You might be surprised at how things that worry you about yourself… like your age, accent, appearance, experience and education… can actually play to your advantage.

So I hope this gives you some encouragement to go for it!
