The surprising secret of success

A little while ago I attended a fantastic networking lunch at the AllBright, the women’s club I belong to.

I was seated next to a young woman who had just launched her own digital marketing company.

Naturally, I was intrigued—I’m always on the lookout for great freelancers to collaborate with, and with 20 years of experience running my own seven-figure business, I figured we might have a lot to discuss.

Or so I thought.

As we started chatting (well, she was mostly talking *at* me), I asked what her company specialised in.

Her answer? “Everything.” Curious, I pressed a bit:

“If you had to pick just one thing, what are you best at?” She doubled down—*everything* was her specialty.

And therein lies the challenge.

Even if she truly is a unicorn who can do it all (though her listening skills might suggest otherwise 😉), a broad, “everything” answer gives us nowhere to go.

Imagine if she had mentioned a specific service, like creating reels for TikTok or organic social media posts.

That’s when a meaningful conversation can spark, and who knows? It could have led to an opportunity for us to collaborate.

But instead, she never even thought to ask what I do or how we might connect.

If she had, I would have gently suggested that honing in on a specialty is a superpower, not a limitation (and this is hard won knowledge from 20 years of hard knocks).

The Surprising Secret of Success?

It’s NOT being good at everything. You don’t need to be.

Rather, knowing what you’re good at, and owning it, is what creates genuine connections and opens doors to deeper conversations and opportunities.

Heartwarming Feedback from a CCA Student.

I received the most wonderful feedback from one of our Course Creation Academy students, Gladys Turner.

She shared, “I would like to appreciate you for your extraordinary course. I am amazed at how my thinking process has changed, absolutely a transformation. I am so excited to crack on, I have outlined my course with the use of micro-actions.”

It’s such a joy to see how small steps—the heart of what we teach in CCA—can lead to big results.

For those of you who follow me on Instagram (and if you don’t, I’d love to see you there—[here’s the link], you might have seen one of my favourite quotes from Dr. Seuss:

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

If I start getting lazy or making excuses I have to remind myself of that… just keep moving forward (in the right direction!)
