I don’t wish to make presumptions about you.
After all, I cannot see you.
All I know is that you’re sitting somewhere with a computer… or perhaps you’re on your smartphone…. or maybe a tablet.
But I can presume this…
As you’ve found your way to this blog post then perhaps at some point you have thought (at least ONCE) about a subject or topic you MIGHT be able to turn into a digital course.
You’ve probably turned it over a few times in your head and thought…
“Hmm… Could I do that?”
Maybe you’ve gone even further and researched it, or messaged me about it.
But still…. it’s not quite happened yet.
And I’m going to bet that perhaps one reason for this is that you might be a bit unsure.
Maybe you doubt that you’ve got the level of skill, qualifications or experience to create and sell loads of courses.
After all, who are you?
You’re probably (I mustn’t make assumptions – I do have some celebs in my orbit!) not world famous, covered in accolades, with awards lining your shelves and glowing articles about you in magazines.
So surely you’re not going to get away with running a course where people are supposed come to you for help and advice?
And I understand this.
I have felt this way many times in my life and career (and sometimes in the early days it stopped me from trying things I really should have tried).
But let me say this straight.
I’m willing to guess you already know enough about your subject to share it in a course.
you have the knowledge, the experience, and the passion in at least one thing that you could share with another person.
It might not seem that way right now.
You might be telling yourself…
“I need to be more like that amazing course creator I just saw in a webinar”.
“I need to gather a few more skills first.”
“I just need to get myself that certification or a qualification.”
“I need to buy a load more courses.”
We’re often our own harshest critics and these thoughts might seem rational and true.
But in fact, they are procrastination in disguise.
This is the voice of your inner doubt trying to keep you in your comfort zone.
These thoughts are a sign that the primal, instinctive part of your brain has been scanning for predators and flagged up course creation as ‘DANGER!’
It’s trying to keep you safe from what they perceive to be harm.
But those inner voices are not to be trusted!
And they’ll keep you stuck in your comfort zone for the rest of your life if you pay heed to them,
The truth is…
You don’t realise how much you know!
You might think you need to reach some mythical level of expertise before you can start a project like running a business or creating a course.
But in reality you’re already capable of making a meaningful impact on another person.
You’ve had a unique life, which has given you a unique combination of experiences and a unique perspective.
Not to sound like an old romantic, but it’s true…
There’s nobody out there quite like you.
There’s someone out there who needs exactly what you have to offer, in the way only you can offer it.
If you’re even just a few steps ahead of them in your journey, then you have valuable insights that can help.
And you’ll be surprised at how much knowledge, which you think is “obvious” is actually not obvious to other people at all.
They’re looking for ordinary folk who are ‘like them’ and who have successfully achieved the goal that they are trying to reach.
Often, this is preferable than seeking the help of top celebs and superstar CEOs.
So please don’t let this false fear hold you back.
And don’t wait for the ‘right time’ to get started…. because it will never come.
Why the best time to start is NOW
It’s tempting to put course creation plans on the back burner, waiting until you can get more skills and confidence.
But when exactly will the time be right?
Next week? Next year? In a decade?
Your knowledge and skills are valuable and needed today, not in some distant future.
There’s a great quote by the American author Alan Cohen, who says:
“Do not wait until the conditions are perfect to begin. Beginning makes the conditions perfect.”
By setting off on the path to creating a course, you will find that a lot of what you THINK are obstacles will just fall away – because they were never obstacles in the first place.
And think about this…
Every expert you admire…. every guru you look up to…. they all started somewhere.
They were all beginners once.
They made mistakes, grew in confidence, and eventually found success.
So don’t wait for that mythical time in the faraway future when you’ll have all the knowledge, skill, time and confidence you need to create a course,
Instead, take a leap. Pick that topic. Draft that first lesson. Plan that first module.
Get going and soon you’ll find that your fears get smaller while your confidence grows and grows!
